Our teenage nieces remind us of high school fashion from the first half of 2023, from peasant tops to low-rise jeans – it feels like a throwback to the days when I drove a mint green sedan and played the band N’SYNC. Now, our 20-something coworkers are leading the return of the 2010s trend, and I’m not upset about it.
Everyone is gushing over the revival of 2010s and 2000s fashion (yes, I agree with that). The golden age of blogging is returning before the age of Netflix. That said, while some of the trends I’ve experienced are returning, I don’t embrace every one of them with gusto. So, here are my thoughts on the trends that I love and those that I’m happy to ditch.
Ruffles.
Oh, sure. Please bring on the ruffles! As a girl with a post-partum body, this style is my favorite – it’s flattering and fashionable at the same time. I’m ready to wear it again.
This sleeveless corseted sweater from Zera intrigued me. It’s similar to my favorite Halogen pieces, but more elegant. It looks great layered with a denim jacket.
If you’re looking for work wear, I’ve picked up this Zera V-neck shirt and paired it with black wide leg pants for the office. When it comes to dresses, Ted Baker and Calvin Klein have great styles, but to be honest, I’d probably buy that jacket I’ve been pining for. Maybe Kyle will get the hint – it’s Sloan’s birthday soon, after all, and I gave birth to her after all.
Skinny jeans.
I’m not here to buy skinny jeans, so get lost! I’ve just rediscovered and fallen in love with wide leg jeans. It’s like falling in love with an old love all over again. Don’t get me wrong, I still wear AG Farrah jeans on occasion, but wide leg jeans are my favorite.
Wide Belt.
That’s right! My waist needs these wide belts to accentuate the lines. Plus, they enhance the style of my slim dresses. This knotted and unbuckled version retails for less than $100 and already appeals to me. Let’s also not overlook the slightly stronger feel of a corset, which is my favorite style.
Short tops
This trend is still too early for me. Short shirts are back in style, but I’m still not interested. I’m not going to get on the bandwagon. If you want an interesting take on it, check out Mom So Hard, it says it all.
Colorblocking.
This one I’m totally down with …… but in moderation. I want to keep it intentional, not random.
On vacation, a pink bathing suit like this one would be perfect. If you’re looking for work wear, this Zera neutral color dress is not a less sophisticated option. For the mid-range, I prefer this dress – just remove the flouncy belt and replace it with a sleek, wide black belt.
I also love this lemon green sweater from Zera. It’s bold and chic and available in a large.
Lamb Skin Jacket
I totally skipped this trend the first time around, but now that it’s cold where I live, I’m totally into it. I already bought a Patagonia vintage pullover last year, and I’m seriously considering a faux wool aviator jacket – for just $99! It’s definitely worth it for that cozy, stylish feel.
Not a fan of wool leather? Aviator jackets are back too, and this oversized Maeve jacket is a great option. Or, opt for this flight green aviator jacket with an orange lining for a classic look.
Diamante heels.
A firm no-no. Those Valentino Rockstud shoes I got for my birthday in 2012, but when I wore them, I realized they were wearing me, not me wearing them. I’m just as comfortable in my Nordstrom flats, and that’s the studded shoe trend I’m after.
Personalized Necklaces
I’m cautiously trying to return to this trend. I won’t wear bulky bubble necklaces though, I just can’t get over the exaggerated design. That kind of trauma is too real.
I do, however, love the big beaded necklaces like the ones Diane Lockhart wore. If you want an accessory that stands out but doesn’t overpower, check out this chic gold knot chain necklace from Zera. It perfectly balances boldness with sophistication.
The ace and this silver jewelry are simply beautiful! These two pieces couldn’t be paired better with a cozy crew neck sweater.
