How to find joy in working weekends

If someone had told me a few years ago that I would be writing this post, I probably would have rolled my eyes. Back then, weekends were sacred. I would have enjoyed the weekend as much as possible and made sure that there was a strict separation between ‘work’ and ‘leisure’. Any responsibilities were put off until Monday.

Of course, this approach did make me happy for a while, but looking back on those weekends when I avoided work altogether, I realize that I used to suffer from what I call “Sunday Night Anxiety” or “Sunday Phobia”.

“I thought it was normal because
other people felt this way too.”

Since everyone around me seemed to be experiencing the same Sunday fear, I thought it was just part of the deal. I worked hard Monday through Friday and tried to forget about work on the weekends.

Then I decided to start my own business and work naturally made its way into my weekends, especially Sundays. Surprisingly, a very interesting thing happened – I started to really enjoy working on the weekends!

There’s a special kind of serenity that comes with working on the weekends – there are fewer emails, less stress than on Mondays, a slower pace, and more creativity. What once felt like working on weekends was a terrible idea is now something I look forward to.

If you’re not used to working on weekends, I’d love to share some tips to help you really enjoy it. I promise, it’s totally doable!

5 Tips for Enjoying Working Weekends

  1. Get rid of time constraints
Weekends are the perfect time to get away from the pressure of pressing work. There’s no one waiting to see your next email or demanding an immediate response. You can rest as much as you want and meetings (if any) are kept to a minimum. Maybe you’ll work for 20 minutes, or maybe you’ll get into a groove and work for hours. It all depends on how you pace your weekend.
  2. Work anywhere, anytime… comfortably.
The beauty of working at the weekend is that you can set up your “office” wherever you are most comfortable. Whether it’s in the garden, in a cozy cafe, or in bed (hey, it’s Sunday!), you can work from anywhere depending on your mood. You can design your working environment according to your mood. Cook yourself a delicious meal, make a cup of tea and put on your favorite record instead of wearing uncomfortable office headphones. The possibilities are endless!
  3. Get organized.
One of the most effective ways I’ve found to eliminate Sunday anxiety is to use the weekend to get organized. I love working on emails, organizing my inbox and checking off to-do lists. When Monday rolls around, everything is organized, which means I can wake up stress-free and not have to rush to get organized. This has revolutionized my Monday morning habits and keeps me geared up and ready to go.

Making the most of your weekend working hours doesn’t have to be a burden. In fact, it can become a welcome part of your daily routine, helping you to be more productive, more organized, and even allowing you to handle workplace stress with ease. If you get it right, you may find yourself starting to look forward to your next weekend of work.

Why I’m starting to like Mondays – and you can too!

It sounds crazy, but I’m really starting to like Mondays! Believe it or not, it was a game-changing moment for me. Maybe you’ve never considered it before, but if you schedule your entire week – from work to errands and chores – you’ll be surprised at how smoothly your day goes. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later!

1. Find the balance you need

Weekends are supposed to be fun, but how great would it be if you could start the week with a win? Imagine completing one of your toughest tasks before Monday even arrives. Choose a task that requires a lot of brain power and focus and tackle it. Upon completion, your brain will feel sharp and energized (assuming, of course, that you’ve taken a well-deserved break!) . Plus, it helps avoid the dreaded Monday syndrome.

To keep things balanced, you can also try a job that you really enjoy! This combination of productivity and fun will get the week off to a great start. And hey, you’ll even have more time for happy hour with friends on Wednesday nights!

2. Don’t forget to log off

Weekends are for recharging. So before you dive headfirst into work mode on Sunday, make sure you give yourself an evening to relax. Use this time to do something that makes you feel good and recharges you for the busy week. Trust me, when you’re ahead of schedule with some daunting tasks, leaving yourself time to relax will make your work week a lot easier!

What do you think?

So, what do you think? Do you see the value in working a little bit on the weekends? Do you feel like you work on Saturdays or Sundays because you are forced to? Or, maybe you’re like me and like to get some work done when others don’t expect it?

Remember – working a little on the weekends makes the week feel balanced and productive!

Love you.
