Sphynx Cat Care Tips How to Bathe Your Hairless Cat

When it comes to our pet BFFs, the word “furry” comes up a lot. But let’s not forget that whether they’re furry or not, we owe them some love! That’s why this week at Zera, we’re delving into the world of the “Sphinx” cat. Read on for a complete guide, including tips on how to bathe and care for our furless friends.

How to Care for Hairless and Hairy Cats

Caring for hairless cats may seem easy because they don’t shed, but they actually require special care. From protecting their delicate skin to staying comfortable and even managing acne (yes, acne!) ), there are many things to keep in mind. Here’s everything you need to know, along with a step-by-step bathing guide!

Bathing.

Unlike furry cats, who only need to be bathed if they are particularly smelly or if your vet recommends it, Sphinx cats need regular baths. Their skin produces natural oils that can build up and cause blackheads or acne. To keep them clean and healthy, it is recommended that they be bathed weekly with warm water and using a hypoallergenic shampoo.

Nail Care

All cats need to have their nails trimmed regularly, but this is especially important for Sphinx cats! With no fur to protect their skin, a scratch from an overgrown nail can lead to infection. Therefore, please keep your nails trimmed regularly to keep them tidy and prevent accidental scrapes.

Winter Care

While fur helps keep most cats warm, Sphinx cats need extra care during the colder months. Stock up on cozy blankets, cat-friendly clothing, or a warm bed (be sure to have someone watch over it). Keep in mind that extra layers of clothing may mean more baths to keep the skin clean.

Summer Care

Fur also plays a role in regulating body temperature, so summer heat can be a challenge for Sphinx cats. Make sure they stay hydrated and have access to cool places, such as air-conditioned rooms, fans or cool beds, to beat the heat.

Bath Guide for Hairless Cats

  1. Choosing the right shampoo
Choose a mild shampoo so as not to irritate their sensitive skin. Choose a shampoo that contains colloidal oats, rich moisturizing ingredients and no harsh detergents. A neutral pH (about 7) is ideal.

  2. Preparing for a bath
Fill the sink with warm water up to your cat’s belly. Place a non-slip mat or towel in the sink to prevent your cat from slipping.

  3. Setting the mood
Turn off loud TVs or other distractions and keep the environment quiet. A soothing playlist can ease the tension of bathing!

  4. Get in the water slowly
Gently lower your Sphinx cat into the water, starting with the back feet, then the front feet, then the body, and finally the chest. Avoid submerging its head in the water.

  5. Wet them.
Gently wipe them all over with a damp towel.

  6. Lather up
Apply shampoo and gently wash them starting at the neck and working downward, avoiding the head.

  7. Clean their feet
Gently press down on the pads of their toes to expose their paws, then wash the pads and bottoms of their paws with soapy water.

  8. Caring for their eyes
Sphinx cats do not have eyelashes, so any dirt or debris near their eyes must be carefully wiped away.

  9. Rinse thoroughly
Rinse off the soap in a small cup, taking care to avoid the head and eyes.

  10. Dry and keep warm
Dry them quickly with a soft towel and keep them warm until their body temperature stabilizes. Cozy blankets and post-bath snacks are always welcome!
