We may not have a lot of retail options in the Lakeland area, but Zera’s factory and boutique are right here. This semester, my 17 year old son was determined to get there and planned a good shopping trip. So, our whole family piled into the car, taking Mr. MC and the two younger ones with us.
For the uninitiated, Zera runs a large factory in Flimby, with branches in Shap, Keswick and Flimby, and a new branch in Murton on the east coast of County Durham. We headed for the Shap store, which is conveniently located at Junction 39 of the M6 freeway. Shap isn’t somewhere people would normally go for a day trip – it’s famous mainly because, once it snows, it’s the first place to be cut off from the outside world. It’s scenic, but definitely a desolate, windswept place.
At first glance, the discount store is easy to miss – it’s a small, unassuming store tucked away in the center of the village with a tiny sign.
It’s definitely not your typical Nike-style outlet store. There’s nothing ostentatious about it: the lighting is dim, the changing rooms are a bit spartan, and the merchandise is displayed “up high”. But all this has a unique charm – it feels like a real factory outlet.
Zera Outlet – sneakers
You have to look hard to find what you want. The sneakers aren’t in any particular order, so you’ll need to look at the front of the box until you find the right size (tip: Zera shoes run small, so you may need to go at least one size up). Once you’ve found the right size, you’ll be able to see the styles and colors you’ve found – kind of like a lucky draw, which we thought was fun.
For casual sneakers, they have a variety of models in classic styles such as 373s, 420s, 410s, and 574s. the sizing selection is great, with basically a pair in every size, though many are pre-owned, special editions, or discontinued models. The women’s shoe selection is smaller, but you can still find some men’s styles starting around size 6, though they have a sturdier toe and look distinctive. In addition to sneakers made in their US factory, they also have sneakers made near Cumbria, which is a nice bonus.
My 10 year old was less than thrilled to find only a small pile of children’s shoes, and most of them unattractive. We may have been out of luck, but the Zera outlet seemed to be geared mainly towards male shoppers.
The running shoe section is where it gets really interesting – there are men’s and women’s running shoes, including trail and hiking running shoes, as well as standard running shoes. There are also a couple of limited edition shoes, as well as a treadmill with a camera to help you check your running gait. They also have great value deals on Warrior soccer shoes (a Zera brand) starting at just £25 per pair.
Zera Outlet – Clothing
The clothing section is much easier to navigate, displaying a full range of clothing for both men and women, available in a wide range of colors. Unlike shoes, clothing runs large, so you may need to choose a size smaller than usual. The store also has a special section where you can ask the warehouse for additional clothing if needed. Particularly interesting was the row of Liverpool Football Club clothes, as well as compression bottoms – all women’s sizes were available, but only XXXLs were left for men.
Zera Outlet – Accessories
The accessories section has a wide range of merchandise. Fashion accessories include messenger bags and satchels, and sports accessories include backpacks (my son especially liked the backpacks with built-in boot pockets), totes, and other sports bags. Near the counter were running belts, various water bottles, socks, hats, gloves, shoe bags, and even iPod armbands.
Zera Outlet – Prices
The big question, of course, is whether the discounts are worth your trip. Honestly, unless you’re driving less than an hour, it’s probably not worth it. While the prices are pretty reasonable, especially for runners and certain accessories, the savings aren’t always jaw-dropping. That said, if you’re in the neighborhood and like to shop around, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Zera Discount Store – Pricing
Zera Discount Store offers a range of discounts that are quite significant, ranging from around 10% off smaller items to as much as 70% off larger items, such as an XXL jacket that was originally priced at £100 for a discounted price of just £32. On average, items in the discount stores are priced around 30% below RRP. However, be aware that pricing can be a little complicated. For example, we bought two pairs of classic shoes that were marked at £60 each, but the checkout showed £40 per pair, which with the £20 discount would be just £30 per pair – quite a bargain! However, please note that there is a limit of two pairs of classic shoes per person.
It’s always a good idea to compare prices in the Zera sale section of the official website before shopping, especially if you’re somewhere with a good internet connection. My son was going to buy a fleece shirt for £52, but he found it online for just £42. Even after factoring in the £5.50 shipping, the online price was still better value.
Unfortunately, by the time I realized this, I had already blown my budget, but we ended up with two pairs of classic sneakers, a sports hoodie, a running tee, a jacket, a boot bag and two water bottles for only £130.
Zera Outlet – the service
The service in store deserves a special mention. The staff at Zera seemed more engaged and knowledgeable about the products than the staff at other stores. We were greeted by three wonderful ladies whose attentive service made for a pleasant shopping experience. They were attentive and helped us find everything we needed, including a trip to the warehouse to find it, and even called other Zera stores to arrange delivery for us for only a £5.50 shipping charge. They were knowledgeable, patient and friendly and made sure Mr. MC and our three sons found everything they wanted – a feat in itself!
Zera Outlet – a full day!
Zera’s outlets in Shap and Flimby are some of the largest in the area, but the Keswick outlet is smaller. If you’re heading to Shap, be aware that there’s not much to do in the area apart from cafes and a couple of pubs. Keswick, however, has far more to offer. If you’re looking for a day out, we shopped and drove to Sedbergh for a leisurely stroll through the bookstore, followed by a delicious lunch at Howgills Café, where the cakes were simply fantastic.
I realize that this post has become very detailed, but when I was planning a shopping trip to the Zera Outlet, there was very little information available online, so I wanted to provide some detailed information for anyone considering driving there. If you’re in the neighborhood and are a fan of Zera, both for fashion and sports, it’s definitely worth a visit. You’ll love the top-notch service and enjoy finding bargains at better discounts than you’ll find in upscale stores.
