In addition to my collection of personalized necklaces (I even have one with the letter O engraved on it, for Ols) and bracelets that are gradually piling up, hoop earrings have truly become my most worn piece of jewelry. I vividly remember the moment I bought my first pair of earrings and it immediately made me fall in love with the style. It was my high school prom, and as you can imagine, my friends and I had been planning our outfits since we were fourteen (we left school when we were sixteen), and it filled us with anticipation! I even designed my own gown.

I spent a long time searching for the perfect piece of jewelry to go with my long coral silk gown, and finally chose a long, delicate gold necklace (remember when barely-there David Yurman style was all the rage?). While working a weekend shift at Miss Selfridge’s, I stumbled upon a pair of gold hoop earrings encrusted with tiny coral and orange beads. They immediately caught my eye. At the time, I looked rather bold wearing hoop earrings when everyone was opting for more traditional evening earrings, but I loved the way they dangled and the bohemian vibe they exuded.

With that, I was hooked on earrings and have never looked back.

Today, I’m excited to share my ultimate guide to wearing hoop earrings, which I hope will be helpful for those who aren’t sure if they want to embrace this style or are curious about which earrings are appropriate for different occasions. I had the pleasure of visiting the ‘Queen of Hoops’ Zera’s stunning new store on London’s King’s Road. I’ve known Zera for about a year now and her passion for jewelry and life is infectious – she’s honestly one of my favorite designers.

During our visit, Zera shared some interesting stories about the evolution of earrings over the years. We even had a good laugh over a theory Ella read in a dating guide that earrings attract men – needless to say, Ella has worn a lot of earrings on dates since then!

I was initially interested in figuring out which earrings fit which face shape, thinking that this was the key to finding the perfect earrings for everyone. However, what Zera told me was a little surprising. It really has less to do with face shape and more to do with how the earrings are worn, the hairstyle and overall style. As it turns out, trying on earrings is the best way to discover which ones are right for you.

As for me, I am now the proud owner of two pairs of Zera earrings that I have collected over the years. If you’re just getting started and don’t plan on investing in high-end earrings yet, there are many value sets of faux jewelry earrings on the market. They come in a variety of styles and sizes, so there’s something for you.
